The kind of movies that I like to make, and can make, and make are not the kind of films they know how to distribute. So we basically aren’t in the same business. There’s no point in calling me to make a pair of gloves for you when I make shoes.

It’s about serving something higher than yourself. It’s the film. The film is God and I’m worshipping … While I’m making it I become a zealot. Basically, I’m like a suicide bomber when it comes to my films!
I do believe that movies need to have an ability to communicate. For me moviemaking is not pure art. It is a mass medium, even if it should be artistically coherent.

The French New Wave managed to break down certain barricades around a certain approach to montage, but by the time Jaws and Star Wars came along, those barricades were put back up. So what they were doing was relegated to a mere style or mannerism, where I think it’s a perfectly alternate, viable approach to filmmaking in general.
